School writing competition for 11-18 year olds

School Writing Competition: Celebrate 35 years of Issues!

Independence Educational Publishers are celebrating our 35th anniversary in 2025! With lots of exciting things planned for next year, we have also decided to hold our first ever writing competition.

This competition is open to all schools in the UK, not just to subscribers of Issues and Issues Online.

We’re asking students to reflect on the question:

"What does self-care mean to me?"

There’s no one right answer, and we encourage students to interpret the topic in their own way. Whether it’s exploring the importance of self-care, sharing personal tips on maintaining physical or mental health, discussing how society views self-care, or offering a unique perspective on the subject, we want to hear it all!

Word count: 500-1000 words

Featured in Print and Online

The winning articles will be published in our Issues book Teen Health (coming out in Autumn 2025) and showcased on Issues Online.

Age Categories

We’ve split the competition into two age groups:

  • 11-14 years
